Huskies Host Colby on Tuesday (4 p.m.)
GORHAM, Maine -- The New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) announced this afternoon that University of Southern Maine junior Whitney Padgett (Eden Prairie, Minn.) has been selected as the women's Goaltender of the Week for the period ending January 6.
This is the first time in her three-year USM career that Padgett has been picked as the Goaltender of the Week. She also received a Rookie of the Week citation on November 14, 2016.
Padgett is the fifth USM women's player to receive a weekly accolade from the NEHC this season. She joins rookie forward Bridget Fagan (Millis, Mass.), senior goalie Britney Evangelista (North Smithfield, R.I.), sophomore forward Rylie Binette (Milan, N.H.) and junior forward Katie Nolan (Dorchester, Mass.) among the players to collect a weekly honor. Fagan was the NEHC Rookie of the week on October 29. Evangelista is a three-time selection as Goaltender of the Week (October 29, November 5, December 10). Binette and Nolan received spots on the weekly honor roll.
In the Huskies' first game back from the exam and holiday break, Padgett backstopped her side to a 4-1 win over host Saint Michael's College in the first day of play in the Delta Hotels Burlington Ice Hockey Classic. Padgett made 35 saves to earn her third win of the season and presented head coach John Lauziere with his 100th career coaching victory.
With her effort against Saint Michael's, Padgett lowered her goals against average to 1.86, and improved her save percentage to .948.
Southern Maine, 4-6-4 overall and 3-4-2 in NEHC play, is slated to play a rescheduled game with Colby College on Tuesday (4 p.m.).
