Southern Maine Downs Becker 3-1

WORCESTER, Mass. -- Sophomore Rylie Binette (Milan, N.H.) had two goals and an assist as the University of Southern Maine women's ice hockey team used a three-goal second period to defeat the Becker College Hawks 3-1 in a non-conference game Friday evening.

The win snapped a two-game losing skid for the Huskies and improved their overall record to 5-7-4.  The Hawks, playing their first game since December 11, slip to 1-10-3 overall.

After a scoreless first period, the teams combined for all the scoring in second stanza.  The Hawks grabbed the lead at 2:19 of the period when senior Catherine McShera (Marston Mill, Mass.) potted her second goal of the season off assists from classmate Brittany Aiello (Franklin Park, Ill.) and junior Olivia Dupree (Centerport, N.Y.).

The Hawks' lead lasted all of 23 seconds as the Huskies stormed right back to tie the game as Binette and sophomore Shannon Colbert (Manomet, Mass.) set up junior Jill Hannigan (Portland, Maine) for her sixth marker of the season.

Binette snapped the 1-1 tie at the 8:52 mark tallying her fifth of the season by redirecting the puck into the net off a shot from senior Jensen Hamblett (Hinesburg, Vt.).  Binette added an insurance marker with five seconds remaining in the period from Colbert and rookie Bridget Fagan (Millis, Mass.).  Fagan intercepted a pass and sent Binette and Colbert in.  The two exchanged passes with Binette finishing for her sixth goal.

The Hawks dominated the third period outshooting the Huskies 10-1, but USM senior goalie Britney Evangelista (North Smithfield, R.I.) protected the lead to finish with 27 saves and earn her second win of the season.  Becker senior goalie Julia Johnson (Littleton, Colo.) stopped 20 shots.

In addition to Binette's three-point night, Hannigan finished with a goal and an assist, and Colbert dished out two assists.

The two teams will meet again Saturday afternoon (1 p.m.) for the second half of their home-and-home weekend series at the USM Ice Arena.
