Padgett, Southern Maine Blank Becker 4-0
GORHAM, Maine -- Rookie Bridget Fagan (Millis, Mass.) scored a pair of goals and junior goalie Whitney Padgett (Eden Prairie, Minn.) stopped 26 shots as the University of Southern Maine women's ice hockey team shut out visiting Becker College 4-0 in non-conference action Saturday afternoon at the USM Ice Arena.
The win gave the Huskies a sweep of the home-and-home weekend series between the teams, and improved their overall record to 6-7-4. The Hawks dropped to 1-11-3 overall. The Huskies won Friday night's game at Becker 3-1.
Sophomore Rylie Binette (Milan, N.H.) had a goal and an assist, and sophomore Shannon Colbert (Manomet, Mass.) and junior Amanda Piknick (Hyannis, Mass.) dished off two assists, for the Huskies. Junior Katie Nolan (Dorchester, Mass.) had the other USM goal.
Padgett had a relatively easy first period as the Huskies rolled up a 15-6 edge in shots on goal. Her workload picked up over the next two periods, and included 11 saves in the third period. The shutout was the first of season for Padgett, and the fourth of her career.
Nolan gave the Huskies the lead for good with her fifth marker of the season at 7:16 of the opening period by redirecting a Piknick shot. Fagan's first goal of the game, on the power play at 11:37, came on a wrist shot into the top right corner.
Fagan netted her second of the game, and third of the season, midway through the second period off assists from Binette and Colbert. Binette tallied the final goal stuffing home a close-range shot after taking a pass from Colbert.
Becker senior goalie Julia Johnson (Littleton, Colo.) finished the game with 31 saves.
Southern Maine is back in action next Friday (3:55 p.m.) with a New England Hockey Conference match at Johnson and Wales University. Becker's next game is a non-conference affair at home against Suffolk University on Tuesday (7:05 p.m.).
