Castleton Downs Southern Maine in OT 3-2
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Aimee Briand (Barrington, N.H.) scored at 3:35 of overtime to give the visiting Castleton University Spartans a 3-2 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies Saturday afternoon in a New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) women's game at the USM Ice Arena.
The win extends the Spartans' unbeaten streak to four games (3-0-1), and gave them a sweep of the teams regular season home-and home series. The Spartans improved to 7-12-3 overall and 7-4-2 in NEHC play. The Huskies dropped to 7-10-6 overall and 4-6-4 in league play.
Briand's initial shot from 30 feet out was blocked by a USM defender, but the senior forward was able to collect the rebound and fire a shot into the top corner over the shoulder of USM junior goalie Whitney Padgett (Eden Prairie, Minn.). The goal was the sixth of the season for Briand.
USM senior Jensen Hamblett (Hinesburg, Vt.) score the lone goal of the opening period, a power-play marker in the final minute, to stake the home side to a 1-0 lead.
In the middle period, sophomore Casey Trail (South Shields, England) tied the game at 9:38 with an unassisted goal. Senior Jocelyn Forrest (Prince George, B.C.) put the visitors on top with her 12th marker of the season at 14:58.
USM struck again in the final minute of the period as rookie Brianna Doty (Lyndonville, Vt.) stuffed in a rebound for her second goal of the season at 19:23.
The teams skated through a scoreless third period that saw the Spartans pile up a 13-6 advantage in shots on goal.
Padgett finished with 29 saves for USM. Senior Rylie Wills (Sioux Lookout, Ont.) stopped 16 shots at the other end for Castleton. The Spartans finished with a 32-18 edge in shots.
Southern Maine closes the 2018-19 regular season next week hosting Plymouth State University in a rescheduled game form November 20 on Tuesday (7 p.m.) and New England College for Senior Day on Saturday (1 p.m.). Castleton hosts New England College on Monday (7 p.m.) in a rescheduled game from January 19.
