Jordan Scores Game Winner with 22 Seconds to Play
CASTLETON, Vt. -- Senior Aliza Jordan (Gorham, Maine) scored her third goal of the game with 22 seconds remaining in regulation as the University of Southern Maine Huskies pulled out a 13-12 victory over the Castleton University Spartans in a Little East Conference women's lacrosse game Saturday at Dave Wolk Stadium.
The win got the Huskies back to .500 on the season at 4-4, and they remain unbeaten in conference play at 2-0. The Spartans had their two-game win streak stopped by the loss, falling back to .500 at 5-5. The Spartans, in their first season as a member of the LEC, are 1-1 in the conference.
Leading 7-6 at halftime, the Huskies came out strong in the second half outscoring the Spartans 4-1 in the first seven minutes to go ahead 11-7. The Spartans chipped away at the deficit over the next 11 minutes scoring five consecutive goals, erasing the deficit and taking a 12-11 lead with 12:05 to play.
The Spartans were able to maintain their slim advantage for nearly nine minutes until USM senior Colleen Fleming (South Portland, Maine) tied the game, scoring an unassisted goal with 3:15 left on the clock.
After a Spartan turnover in the offensive third, the Huskies moved down the feel and set up their offense. A shot by sophomore Alex Farley (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) was stopped by Castleton freshman goalie Raven Payne (Cornwall, Vt./Middlebury), but the Huskies were able to regain possession and called a timeout with 44 seconds left on the clock.
With the seconds ticking off, Jordan carried the ball across the front of goal and fired a shot just under the crossbar into the right corner for her 25th goal of the season.
Junior Erin Shuttle (Georgia, Vt./BFA St. Albans) gained possession for Castleton on the ensuing draw, but the Spartans were not able to get a shot off before the buzzer sounded.
Jordan finished the game with three goals, two assists and a team-high six draw controls. Fleming added three goals, one assist, three ground balls and two draw controls. Junior Allison Irish (Lyman, Maine/Massabesic) and freshman Lindsey Keenan (Naples, Maine/Lake Region) had two goals apiece for the Huskies. Junior Dorina Sirois (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) scooped up a game-high five ground balls, and senior goalie Hala Van Nostrand (Granby, Conn.) made seven saves to earn her fourth win of the season.
Shuttle and senior Erin McKenna (York, Maine) accounted for two-thirds of the Spartan goals as each scored four times. Junior Emma Best (Salisbury, Vt./Middlebury Union) had two goals. Payne, who came on with 24:29 remaining in the game, allowed three goals, made four saves and took the loss. Senior starter Samantha Hebb (Ashland, Mass.) made five saves and allowed 10 goals over the first 35:31.
Southern Maine will play its final non-conference game of the season on Wednesday (4 p.m.) traveling to New England College. Castleton will host SUNY Canton in a non-conference game on Monday (4 p.m.).
