Southern Maine Holds Off Keene State 16-13
GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine women 's lacrosse team used a 7-1 surge in the second half to build a 16-9 lead, then had to hold off a furious rally by Keene State College over the final six minutes to prevail 16-13 in a Little East Conference game Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field.
The win was the third straight, and fifth in the last six game, for the Huskies who improved to 6-4 overall and 3-0 in LEC play. The Huskies snapped an eight-game losing streak at the hands of the Owls. USM last defeated LKSC in the opening round of the LEC tournament in 2013.
The Owls dropped their third straight game to slide to 4-6 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
Leading 9-6 at halftime, the Huskies saw their lead trimmed to one, 9-8, before going on their surge over a 17-minute span. Freshman Lindsey Keenan (Naples, Maine/Lake Region) and senior Aliza Jordan (Gorham, Maine) each scored three goals during the surge.
A determined KSC team regrouped to take the momentum. Still down 16-10 inside two minutes to play, the Owls got goals from sophomores Megan Gorham (Marshfield, Mass.) and Ali Daisy (Raynham, Mass./Bridgewater-Raynham) and senior Chelsea Lewis (Londonderry, N.H.) in a span of 48 seconds to close the gap to three.
After the Lewis goal, USM won the draw and was able to run 25 seconds off the clock before a turnover to preserve the win.
Jordan led all players with eight points on five goals and three assists. Keenan finished with four goals and one assist. Freshman Taylor Rinaldi (Freeport, Maine) and junior Allison Irish (Lyman, Maine/Massabesic) each had three goals and two assists. Senior goalie Hala Van Nostrand (Granby, Conn.) made 12 saves.
Freshman Bridget Casey (Mont Vernon, N.H.) led the Owls scoring four times and dishing off two assists. Daisy finished with three goals and one assist, and Lewis had three goals. Senior Anna O'Brien (Winchester, Mass.) started in goal for the Owls and stopped five shots in the first half. Sophomore Joanna Steinhauer (Middletown, R.I.) came on to play the second half to stop four shots.
Southern Maine will take on Plymouth State University on Wednesday (7 p.m.) at New Hampton (N.H.) School. Keene State will play at Castleton University on Wednesday (7 p.m.).
