Fleming Leads USM Past Rhode Island College 19-6

GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Colleen Fleming (South Portland, Maine) scored a career-high 10 points, including her milestone 100th point, to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 19-6 win over the visiting Rhode Island College Anchorwomen in Little East Conference women's lacrosse action under the lights Saturday night at Hannaford Field.  The game was the regular season finale for both sides.

The win was the third straight for the Huskies, and improved their record to 9-5 overall and 6-1 in conference play.  The Huskies will be the number two seed in next week's LEC championship tournament and receive a first-round bye.  The Anchorwomen finished their season 6-8 overall and 2-5 in LEC play.  They finished in a three-way tie for fifth place with Castleton University and Eastern Connecticut State University, but will not advance to the six-team tournament on tiebreakers.

Fleming surpassed her previous single-game high of seven points set last year against New England College by scoring a career-best seven goals and handing off three assists.  Coming into the game six points shy of the century mark, Fleming notched her milestone point with a goal at the 7:41 mark of the first half as the Huskies raced to a 15-4 lead at the break.

Senior Aliza Jordan (Gorham, Maine) contributed four goals and one assist to go along with a game-high 10 draw controls for the Huskies.  Junior Megan Violette (Portland, Maine/Deering) added three goals and one assist, and sophomore Alex Farley (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) had a pair of goals.

Sophomore Giana Ritchie (Cumberland, R.I.) led the Anchorwomen scoring three times and dishing out one assist.  Ritchie also shared team-high honors for draw controls with freshman Morgan Pero (White River Jct., Vt./Hartford) as each scooped up four.

USM senior goalie Hala Van Nostrand (Granby, Conn.) made two saves to earn her seventh win of the season.  Her RIC counterpart, senior Julia Eaton (Cumberland, R.I.), stopped nine shots.

The Huskies outshot the Anchorwomen 34-10 in the game and piled up a 23-9 advantage in ground balls.

Fleming struck twice in the opening three minutes, and Violette quickly followed to give USM a 3-0 lead.  Pero put RIC on the board at 25:43.  Jordan and Ritchie traded goals to make it 4-2 seven minutes into the game.

Leading 8-4 midway through the half, the Huskies ran off seven straight goals before halftime to lead comfortably at the half.

Prior to the game, the Huskies honored their five departing seniors: Fleming, Jordan, Van Nostrand, Mira Kuni (Waterboro, Maine/Massabesic) and Miriam Wood (Wakefield, Mass.).
