NEW LONDON, Conn. –  Junior Daniel Del Gallo (Gardiner, Maine), ranked sixth nationally by the NWCA at 149 pounds, picked up a pair of victories to highlight the University of Southern Maine Huskies wrestling team in a pair of dual matches at the United States Coast Guard Academy Friday evening.

Facing fifth-ranked Roger Williams University, Southern Maine fell to the Hawks 45-9.  In their second match of the day, USM dropped a 33-14 match to the USCGA Bears.  With the pair of losses, Southern Maine is 1-2 in dual meet action.  Roger Williams remains undefeated with a 6-0 record.  Coast Guard's match against the Huskies was their first of the season and puts their record to 1-0.

Against the nationally-ranked Hawks, junior captain CJ Luth (Milford, Conn./Foran) picked up the lone Huskies' points with a hard-fought and high-scoring 15-13 win over RWU junior Ty Herzog (Slatington, Pa.).  USM's other six points came on a forfeit at the 149 pounds credited Del Gallo.

In their match against the Bears, Southern Maine received points from freshmen Brendan Weir (Easthampton, Mass./Hampshire Regional) and Mike Risti (Limerick, Maine/Massabesic), and Del Gallo.  Wrestling at 141, Weir earned USM's first points of the match with a 14-2 major decision victory against CGA freshman Adam Wilhem (Dayton, Ohio).  Del Gallo followed with a 13-2 major decision win against his 149-pound opponent junior Matt Viera (Muskogee, Ok.).  Risti scored the final points of the match for USM with a forfeit at 197 pounds.

Southern Maine returns to action on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) in a tri-meet at Rhode Island College with Plymouth State University.
