GORHAM, Maine – Senior captain Daniel Del Gallo (Gardiner, Maine) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies' wrestling team earned the first Pilgrim Wrestling League Wrestler of the Week honor for the 2016-2017 season.
Wrestling at 149 pounds, Del Gallo, who is individually ranked third in his weight class by Intermat.com and second by D3wrestle.com, went 6-0 during the week and is presently 8-0 to start his final season in a Huskies' uniform. Del Gallo started his week with a win by fall over Coast Guard senior Matt Vieira, who was in the honorable mention category of national rankings by d3wrestle.com at the time of the match. Del Gallo put Vieira to the mat in 1:36.
Later in the week, Del Gallo went on to claim first place at 149 pounds at the Washington and Jefferson Invitational posting a 5-0 mark, including two wins by fall. Del Gallo grabbed the 149-pound title defeating the number two ranked wrestler in NCAA Division II, Dominick Nania of Wheeling Jesuit by decision 16-13.
A three-time NWCA Scholar All-American and William B. Wise Scholar Athlete, Del Gallo, a philosophy and sociology major, is a two-time winner of the NCAA Elite award, earning the Elite 89 award in 2015 and the Elite 90 award in 2016. A two-time NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament participant, Del Gallo has placed in the top three of the NCAA Division III Northeast Regional Championship in 2015 and 2016. Entering his senior year with a record of 91-18, Del Gallo is 99-18 after his 8-0 start.
Along with Del Gallo's national ranking by both intermat.com and d3wrestle.com, two other Husky grapplers are drawing attention nationally for their efforts early in the season. Senior captain CJ Luth (Milford, Conn./Foran) and freshman Peter Del Gallo (Gardiner, Maine) – the younger brother of Dan Del Gallo – are in the honorable mention and contender notes for their respective weight classes.
Luth, a 2016 New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) honorable mention all-star and Pilgrim League Wrestling All-Star selection in 2016, is noted in the honorable mention rankings of d3wrestle.com for the 157-pound division. Luth finished second at the Washington and Jefferson Invitational, dropping a narrow 7-3 decision in the championship bout against an NCAA Division II opponent from Wheeling Jesuit. He is 5-2 through seven matches this season with two wins by technical fall and two wins by fall. His other loss of the season, a 5-2 decision, came against the number four ranked wrestler in Division III, Christopher Sullivan of Coast Guard.
Peter Del Gallo sits just outside of d3wrestle.com's top 10 individual ranking, and is listed as a contender at 125-pounds. Off to a hot start in his rookie campaign, Del Gallo is a perfect 8-0 to start his intercollegiate career. At the Washington and Jefferson Invitational, Del Gallo went 5-0 to claim the 125-pound title, including a 9-6 win over Millersville's Austin Camacci.
