GORHAM, Maine – Junior Mike Risti (Limerick, Maine/Massabesic) and Peter Del Gallo (Gardiner, Maine) each recorded a pair of wins by fall to lead a dominant performance by the University of Southern Maine Huskies wrestling team in a pair of dual meet victories Saturday afternoon. Southern Maine defeated Rhode Island College 47-3 and then concluded the day with a 45-3 win over Plymouth State. The opening match of the day featured RIC versus PSU, with Rhode Island College coming out on top 24-19.
With the pair of wins, Southern Maine is now 3-0 in dual meet contests. Plymouth State is 2-2 in dual meets following a pair of losses, while Rhode Island College is 1-3 in dual meets.
After dropping the opening bout (125) by decision, USM won the next nine bouts to take a 47-3 victory over the Rhode Island College Anchormen. Del Gallo scored the Huskies' first points of the match earning a win by fall pinning RIC's Alex Devito in 1:36. Del Gallo's pin was the first of three consecutive pins by Southern Maine as he was followed by a win by fall from freshman Austin Shorey (Lebanon, Maine/Noble) in 1:36 and another win by fall from sophomore Jared Garcia (Marshfield, Mass.) in 2:59 at 149 pounds. USM had four wins by fall in the match capped by Risti's pin of the Anchormen's Ricky Brown in 1:24 at 285 pounds.
Back-to-back pins started the match off for the Huskies against Plymouth State with a win from freshman Leo Amabile (Waterboro, Maine/Massabesic) over PSU Mike Titus in 1:56 at 125, followed by Del Gallo's ninth win by fall with a pin in 2:42 over Plymouth's Sam Goldberg. USM led 23-0 after a win by technical fall from junior Brendan Weir (Easthampton, Mass./Hampshire Regional). Weir defeated Brett Kimball 15-0 for the victory. PSU scored its only points of the match with a win by decision at 157 pounds from Nick Simeti 6-3. Risti picked up the final pin of the match at 285, downing Trevor Wassel in 50 seconds.
Southern Maine competes in one more dual match before the break and will travel to Castleton University on Saturday (2:30 p.m.).
