CASTLETON, Vt. – Sophomore Peter Del Gallo (Gardiner, Maine), freshman Austin Shorey (Lebanon, Maine/Noble) and senior Brendan Weir each earned wins to pace the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a 23-11 loss to the Castleton University Spartans Saturday afternoon. The loss is the first of the season for the Huskies in dual meet action, who are now 3-1.
Dropping several of its matches in narrowly contested decisions, Southern Maine trailed Castleton 14-0 after the first four matches of the meet. Del Gallo scored USM's first points of the meet, earning a 15-2 major decision victory over Nick Camacho. Ranked first in New England, and third/fifth nationally at 133 pounds, Del Gallo remains undefeated at 16-0 headed into the New Year.
Shorey, ranked third in New England, followed Del Gallo with a major decision win of his own, dominating Ben Billings 10-0 at 141 and improves to 14-3. Weir picked up USM's third straight win, cutting the Huskies' deficit to 14-11, earning a 6-1 decision over Max Temple at 149 pounds, but the Spartans scored three consecutive wins by decision to claim the win over Southern Maine.
Southern Maine is off for the semester break and will return to action on Saturday, January 6 (10:00 am) for the North-South Duals.
