COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Third-ranked sophomore Peter Del Gallo (Gardiner, Maine) remained undefeated on the season picking up four wins to highlight a strong performance by the University of Southern Maine Huskies wrestling team at the North/South Duals hosted by Ursinus College Saturday afternoon.
With its 3-2 record on the day, Southern Maine stands at 6-3 in dual meet action. Southern Maine defeated Division II Shippensburg 22-18, Elizabethtown 30-7, and Mount St. Vincent, 43-12. The Huskies' two losses came the hands of top-20 programs, no. 14 Messiah 34-18, and no. 10 Stevens 26-14.
Del Gallo opened the day with an 11-1 major decision over Shippensburg's David Reagan. After sitting out the dual match against Mount St. Vincent, Del Gallo rattled off three more wins earning a crushing 20-1 technical fall over Elizabethtown's Phil Torresani, a 4-0 decision against Joseph Borai of Stevens, and a 7-3 decision over Messiah's Sean Reddington.
Wrestling at 285 USM junior Mike Risti (Limerick, Maine/Massabesic) also finished the day with a 4-0 record, including a pair of major decision victories and a win by fall over Messiah's Dan Kiser in 2:49. Husky freshman Austin Shorey (Lebanon, Maine/Noble), competing at 141, posted a 3-1 record. Shorey's lone loss of the day, a 13-2 major decision loss, came at the hands of the number two ranked wrestling in the country at the weight class Brett Kaliner of Stevens. Shorey had two wins by decision and a dominant 15-0 win by technical fall over Messiah's Nick Nunez.
Southern Maine returns to action on Saturday (10:00 am) at the Plymouth State University Jim Aguiar Invitational.
