GORHAM, Maine – After a big win in the national stage, sophomore Peter Del Gallo (Gardiner, Maine) of the Univeristy of Southenr Maine Huskies' wrestling team has been named the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Wrestler of the Week. The award was announced late Thursday night.
Earning his second weekly honor from NEWA this season, Del Gallo went 2-0 last week, picking up a huge win over the top-ranked wrestler in his weight division and kept his 2017-2018 overall record unblemished at 31-0. Beginning the week ranked third nationally at 125 pounds, Del Gallo opened his week of competition with a dominant 8-0 major decision win over Ben Zogby of WPI.
Going head-to-head with top-ranked Jonathan Haas, a returning 2017 All-American and third place finisher at last year's national championship, of SUNY-Brockport in his next match, Del Gallo battled his way to a 4-3 decision. The win marked Del Gallo's second victory of the season over a returning All-American in the 125 weight class.
The 2017 NEWA Co-Rookie of the Year, Del Gallo has been ranked atop the 125-pound division in the New England region, and has been ranked in the top-10 nationally by both intermatwrestle.com and d3wrestle.com. Del Gallo has an impressive career-record of 66-3, and earned All-Region honors during his rookie season.
Southern Maine returns to competition on Saturday, February 3 hosting SUNY-Sullivan, Trinity and Western New England at the Costello Sports Complex. Matches begin at 12:00 p.m.
