GORHAM, Maine – Punctuated by seven wins by fall, including two from junior heavyweight Mike Risti (Limerick, Maine/Massabesic) the University of Southern Maine Huskies picked up three dual meet wins with dominant performances over SUNY Sullivan, Trinity and Western New England, Saturday afternoon at the Costello Sports Complex.
Southern Maine defeated SUNY-Sullivan 44-3, downed Trinity 40-9 and bested Western New England 25-9 to improve its dual meet record to 12-9. The Huskies will compete in three more dual meets on Saturday (11:00 am) at RIT. Southern Maine will go head-to-head with RIT, Oneonta and Penn Tech.
Risti finished the day 3-0 with a win by major decision and two falls to improve his record to 25-6. Rist now has 11 wins by fall this season. Risti defeated SUNY-Sullivan's Joshua Jean-Baptiste 12-4 for a major decision win. Against Trinity's Mason Sangillo, Risti made quick work of his opponent putting Sangillo to the mat in 17 seconds. Against WNE's Nicholas Fortini, Risti overwhelmed his opponent in 2:00.
Wrestling at 165 pounds, sophomore Josh Smith (York, Maine) also finished the day with a perfect 3-0 mark. Smith had a win by fall over SUNY-Sullivan's Allen Reyes in 2:13, a win by major decision (15-3) against Trinity's Lucian Cascino, and a hard-won 7-3 decision against WNE's Jordan Goins. Freshman Austin Shorey (Lebanon, Maine) also went undefeated in his two matches of the day, improving his record to 23-6. Wrestling at 141, Shorey pinned Trinity's Andrew Saccone in 2:15,and then had a 4-0 decision against WNE's Alex Starr.
Sophomore Peter Del Gallo (Gardiner, Maine) remained undefeated and moved to 32-0 on the season winning his lone match of the day. Ranked third nationally at 125 pounds, Del Gallo defeated WNE's Nicholas Arborio 10-4.
Prior to the start of the day's matches, USM wrestling honored its lone senior Matt Wheeler (Troy, Maine/Mt. View). Wheeler picked up a win by forfeit against SUNY-Sullivan.
