GORHAM, Maine – Freshman Austin Shorey (Lebanon, Maine/Noble) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies' wrestling team has been named the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Rookie Wrestler of the Week. It is the first weekly honor for Shorey.
Shorey earned a pair of wins during the week, helping Southern Maine to a 3-0 week, including two wins over New England teams. In his first match of the week, Shorey pinned Trinity's Andrew Saccone in 2:15. Against Western New England, Shorey earned a 4-0 decision over Alex Starr. With the two victories, Shorey improved his overall record to 23-6 on the season. Shorey's pin over Saccone marked his sixth win by fall this season.
Wrestling at 141 pounds, Shorey is one of five Southern Maine wrestlers ranked in the top six in the New England region. Shorey is presently ranked third in his weight class. Sophomore Justin Stacy (Rochester, N.H./Marshwood) is ranked fifth at 174 pounds, while rookie Brandon Cousino (North Ferrisburgh, Vt./Vergennes Union) and junior Mike Risti (Limerick, Maine/Massabesic) are ranked sixth at 197 and 285 pounds, respectively. Husky sophomore Peter Del Gallo (Gardiner, Maine) is ranked first at 125 pounds, and is ranked second nationally in both the d3wrestle.com and intermatwrestle.com polls.
The Huskies are in action this weekend at RIT. USM will face RIT, Oneonta State and Penn Tech on Saturday (11:00 a.m.) in a quad meet.
