GORHAM, Maine – For the second consecutive week, a University of Southern Maine wrestler has been named the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Rookie of the Week. Freshman Brandon Cousino (North Ferrisburgh, Vt./Vergennes Union) earned the honor this week, joining classmate Austin Shorey (Lebanon, Maine/Noble) as one of two Huskies to earn the accolade this season.
Cousino had an outstanding weekend as the Huskies went 3-0 in their final dual meets of the season to complete the 2017-2018 regular season with a 15-9 record in head-to-head competition. Wrestling at 197 pounds, Cousino was dominant earning three wins by falls to earn another three victories on the season and own a 25-10 record in his rookie season. In a win 26-19 win for the Huskies over Oneonta State, Cousino overpowered his opponent Tim Flowers in 4:57. Cousino then picked up a quick pin downing Matt Cicco of RIT in 37 seconds en route to a 32-21 USM victory, before putting Jared Mooney of Penn Tech to the mat in 2:16 as the Huskies routed their opponents 44-9. A mechanical engineering major, Cousino has 14 wins by fall this season, winning four of his last five matches by way of the pin. Cousino is ranked sixth by NEWA in his weight class.
Heading into the post-season, several Huskies will be in action this Sunday at the NEWA Futures Tournament. The NCAA Northeast Regional Championship on Saturday and Sunday, February 24-25. Seventeen teams from the Northeast region, including the Huskies, will compete for the regional championship while each student-athlete wrestler will vie for one of a total 180 spots in the NCAA Division III National Championship tournament, March 9-10, at the Cleveland Public Auditorium in Cleveland, Ohio.
