PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Freshmen Juan Vernaza (Miramar, Fla./Somerset Academy) and Leo Amabile (Waterboro, Maine/Massabesic) and sophomore Jared Garcia (Marshfield, Mass.) each placed fourth at the 2018 New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Futures Tournament this Sunday to highlight a sixth place finish by the University of Southern Maine Huskies' wrestling team.
Southern Maine placed sixth out of 12 competing teams scoring 37.5 points. Johnson and Wales claimed the top spot scoring 162 points.
Five Husky wrestlers placed in the top six overall. Joining Vernaza, Amabile and Garcia were freshman Raul Gierbolini (Carolma, Puerto Rico/Somerset Academy) and junior Casey Abshire (Lowell, Mass.) who each placed sixth. Amabile had a pair of wins by major decision, including a 10-0 shut out over Castleton's Frank Darwak to earn his fourth place finish at 125 pounds, while Garcia earned a fourth place spot at 149 pounds, finishing the tournament 4-2, including an 18-1win by technical fall over Springfield's Donald Etheridge. Vernanza posted a 3-1 record at 165 pounds with three wins by decision.
Southern Maine will be back in action next weekend at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championship hosted by WPI on Saturday and Sunday, February 24-25 (11:00 a.m.).
