BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Winning the first four weight divisions consecutively the University of Southern Maine Huskies rolled to a 31-10 season-opening dual meet win over the Bridgewater State University Bears in a wrestling dual meet Saturday afternoon.
With the win, Southern Maine starts its season at 1-0. Bridgewater State, also competing in its season-opener is now 0-1.
Southern Maine won seven of the ten bouts in the contest, including wins by fall from sophomore Austin Shorey (Lebanon, Maine/Noble), a 2018 NCAA Division III National Championship qualifier, at 149 pounds. Shorey defeated BSU's Riley Tufts, putting him to the mat in 4:08. Wrestling up a class to start the season, nationally-ranked at 125 pounds, junior Peter Del Gallo (Gardiner, Maine) started his season with a 12-3 major decision win over Caleb Lamarre at 133 pounds. Junior Josh Smith (York, Maine) had a dominate win by technical fall competing 174 pounds.
Southern Maine returns to action on Saturday (9:30 a.m.) at the Roger Williams Invitational.
