GORHAM, Maine – After an outstanding weekend at the Roger Williams University Invitational, University of Southern Maine junior Peter Del Gallo (Gardiner, Maine) has been named the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Wrestler of the Week. It is the first weekly honor for the Huskies' 125-pound wrestler this season.
Del Gallo captured the RWU tournament's 125-pound title by upending defending national champion and previously number-one ranked Jay Albis from Johnson & Wales University. Del Gallo battled his way to a 6-4 sudden victory win over Albis, capping a 3-0 tourney record.
Starting his junior season off with a 4-0 record, Del Gallo has climbed in the national rankings and is currently ranked second nationally at 125 pounds in the November 14 National Wrestling Coaches' Association (NWCA) National Poll. Del Gallo has two wins by fall so far this season.
Led by Del Gallo's first place performance, Southern Maine had six wrestlers place in the top six of the RWU Invite, which features some of the top competition in the Northeast. Seven Huskies, including Del Gallo, are ranked individually in their respective weight classes by NEWA, with Del Gallo being the top-ranked wrestler in the region at 125 pounds. Joining Del Gallo in the NEWA rankings are sixth ranked senior Brendan Weir (East Hampton, Mass./Hampshire Regional) and junior Josh Smith (York, Maine) at 157 and 165 respectivley. Senior 285-pound wrestler Mike Risti (Limerick, Maine/Massabesic) is ranked fourth in his division, while sophomores Bradley Beaulieu (Waterboro, Maine/Marshwood) and Austin Shorey are ranked fourth at 133 and 141 pounds. Sophomore Brandon Cousino (North Ferrisburgh, Vermont/Vergennes Union) is presently ranked third at 197 pounds.
Southern Maine returns to action on Saturday (10:00 a.m.) at the Doug Parker Invitational hosted by Springfield University in Springfield, Mass.
