MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Senior Mike Risti (Limerick, Maine/Massabesic) earned a pair of wins by fall, including his milestone 100th career win to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a pair of dual meet victories Sunday afternoon at Wesleyan University. Southern Maine defeated New England College 35-10, and captured a nail-biting 21-17 victory over Wesleyan.
Capturing wins in its final two dual meets of the season, Southern Maine is 10-9 in head to head competition this season. The Huskies have won their last four dual meets consecutively. New England College is 2-9 with its loss to the Huskies, while Wesleyan stands at 5-9.
Against NEC, USM won eight of 10 bouts including three wins by fall, and a win by technical fall. Senior Brendan Weir (Easthampton, Mass./Hampshire Regional) picked up a 6:00 pin over Ryan Pro at 149, while sophomore Brandon Cousino (North Ferrisburgh, Vermont/Vergennes Union) put Tyler Hiestand to the mat in 2:00 at 197 pounds. Sophomore Raul Gierbolini (Carolina, Puerto Rico/University HS) picked up a dominating 18-2 (4:00) win by technical fall overmike Tanguay at 184. Risti closed out the match with his first pin of the day in 1:30 over Francis Boahen.
Risti's 100th career win was a big one for the Huskies in their victory over Wesleyan. Down 17-15 after the 197 bout was complete, Risti's pin of Wesleyan's Harrison Karp in just 28 seconds game the Huskies a pair of wins. Sophomore Bradley Beaulieu (Waterboro, Maine/Marshwood) also had a win by fall defeating Amir Daouk in 7:00 at 133.
Southern Maine returns to action on Sunday (11:00 a.m.) at the NEWA Futures Tournament hosted by Trinity College.
