GORHAM, Maine – Senior captains Peter Del Gallo (Gardiner, Maine) and Josh Smith (York, Maine) each earned a spot on the podium to highlight a weekend of competition for the University of Southern Maine Huskies wrestling team at the 2019 Roger William University Invitational. Southern Maine finished ninth out of 17 competing teams scoring 71 points. Johnson and Wales University placed first overall with a team score of 174 points, followed by Castleton in second with 146 points and The College of New Jersey in third with 127.5 points.
Smith placed third in the 184 pound bracket. Smith moved on from the first round after defeating Matt Bourquin via medical forfeit after being up 2-0 in the match. Smith then earned a win by fall over Kevin Thomas of Plymouth State in 2:34. In his third match, Smith dropped an 11-4 decision to Bridgewater State's Edwin Morales, before rumbling back to win his next four matches to claim third place.
After the loss, Smith earned a 15-0 technical fall victory over Rhode Island College's Daniel Sblendorio and then three consecutive win by decision. In the third place match, Smith downed Johnson & Wales' Nick Munsch 7-5.
Del Gallo remains undefeated this season earning six more wins to improve to 11-0. Ranked first in the nation at 133 pounds by d3wrestle.com, Del Gallo won all six of his matches at the tournament by fall wrestling at 125 pounds. Del Gallo wrestled his first five matches of the season at 133 pounds. He is ranked second nationally at 125 pounds by Intermatwrestle.com
Del Gallo opened with a pin over Wesleyan's Greg Fisher in 4:29, and then posted a 5:22 pin over JWU's Cassidy Chas. Del Gallo led that match 13-0 before putting Chas to the mat. Del Gallo made quick work of JWU's Adam Quintanilla in the quarterfinals with a pin in 1:44, and then earned a 6:38 pin in the semis over JWU's Chris Caban. In the championship match, Del Gallo earned two quick take downs to lead 4-0 over Castleton's Joehy Valentino before earning a pin in 1:42.
Ten of Del Gallo's wins this season have come via pin. He has 109 wins to his career.
Southern Maine is back in action on Saturday, January 23 (10:00 am) at the Doug Parker Invitational hosted by Springfield College in Springfield, Mass.
