GORHAM, Maine – Senior Taylor Canastra (Fairhaven, Mass.) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies' women's soccer team has been named the Little East Conference Goalkeeper of the Week for the week ending Sunday, September 23. Canastra is the third Huskies' women's soccer player to earn weekly accolades from the LEC this season, joining junior Ciera Berthiaume (Windham, Maine) and freshman Alexandria Allain (Carmel, Maine/Hermon).
Earning conference weekly accolades for the first time in her career, Canastra backstopped the Huskies to a 2-0 week, including a win over Little East opponent Plymouth State. In a 2-1 double overtime win against Thomas College, Canastra made five saves. At Plymouth, Canastra turned way four shots to earn her career-best fourth win by shut out as USM picked up the 1-0 conference victory on the road. Canastra also made key defensive plays during both games coming off of her line to end potential scoring threats or clear the ball.
For the season, Canastra has helped Southern Maine to a 7-1 overall record and a 1-1 mark in the LEC. The 5-7 senior has shut out victories over Mitchell (August 31), Becker (September 8), Salem State (September 11) and Plymouth State (September 22). For the season, Canastra has made 33 saves and has an outstanding 0.84 goals against average, allowing just seven goals in 750:23 minutes of action.
The Huskies remain on the road for their next contest and will take on Wentworth on Wednesday (7:00 p.m.). Southern Maine hosts LEC opponent Western Connecticut on Saturday (12:00 p.m.) for its next home contest.
