GORHAM, Maine – Playing in its sixth overtime game of the season and fifth double-overtime match, the University of Southern Maine Huskies battled to a 1-1 draw with the Maine Maritime Academy Mariners in a non-conference women's soccer game Tuesday night at Hannaford Field.
The Huskies are unbeaten through their last five games (4-0-1) and are 11-3-1 with its first tie of the season. Maine Maritime extends its unbeaten streak to four games (3-0-1) and are now 10-2-1 on the season.
With both goals coming in the first 25 minutes of the game, both the Huskies and Mariners had opportunities through regulation and the pair of overtimes frames but were unable to net the go-ahead goal. Maine Maritime struck first converting on one of its seven corner kicks during the game. Senior Susana DeFrank (Temecula, Calif./Great Oak) lofted in a perfectly placed ball to classmate Makayla Lewis (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley), and Lewis hit a one-time shot to the far post in the 10th minute for a 1-0 Mariner lead.
Down 1-0, Southern Maine pulled even with the Mariners in the 23rd minute when freshman Alexandria Allain (Carmel, Maine/Hermon) hit a well-paced through ball towards the goal to an onrushing senior Emma Dennison (South Portland, Maine). Dennison took a hit and drove the ball to the far post, netting her eighth goal of the season.
Both goalkeepers made spectacular saves late in the contest to preserve tie. MMA sophomore Emily Conway (Charleston, S.C./James Island Charter) made a diving save in the 99th minute on a hard low-post shot from USM junior Ciera Berthiaume (Windham, Maine). Southern Maine senior Taylor Canastra (Fairhaven, Mass.) punched a ball over the cross bar in the 110th of a set piece play from Lewis. Conway made five saves in the draw, while Canastra finished with four.
Southern Maine returns to action on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) when it travels to Eastern Connecticut for a Little East Conference game. Two of the Huskies' final three games are on the road to conclude the regular season.
