Allain & Berthiaume Earns Second Team All-Conference

GORHAM, Maine – After a record setting season, three members of the University of Southern Maine Huskies' women's soccer team are earning post-season recognition from the Little East Conference (LEC).  The 2018 LEC women's soccer major awards and all-conference selections were announced Tuesday following a vote of the league's nine head coaches.

Among the award winners, Southern Maine junior Ciera Berthiaume (Windham, Maine) and freshman Alexandria Allain (Carmel, Maine/Hermon) were selected to the All-LEC second team, while first-year head coach Seth Benjamin '01 was named the 2018 LEC Coach of the Year.

In his first season on the sidelines of Hannaford Field, Benjamin guided the Huskies to a 14-5-1 overall record, a school record for wins in a season, and a 5-3 mark in Little East Conference play. Just the second coach in USM program history (Steve Quinones, 2004) to earn LEC Coach of the Year honors, Benjamin led Southern Maine to a berth in the LEC semifinals after the fourth-seeded Huskies posted a first-round shutout victory (3-0) over the fifth-seed UMass Dartmouth, marking the program's first postseason win since 2005. In a remarkable turnaround from last season's 5-12 record, Benjamin's team is the first Huskies' women's soccer squad to qualify for the postseason tournament since 2013.

One of the Huskies' starting midfielders, Allain made an immediate impact on both sides of the ball for the Huskies.  With seven goals and seven assists in her first season on the pitch at Hannaford Field, Allain was the Huskies' second leading scorer, and finished tied for seventh in points in the LEC (21), 10th in goals (7), and tied for third in assists (7).  Allain's seven assists are tied for second in USM single-season records, while her 21 points are tied for ninth. Allain scored the Huskies' game-winning goal in a 1-0 win over UMass Dartmouth (October 13) during the regular-season and had one goal and three assists against LEC competition.  She was named the conference's Rookie of the Week twice (October 15, September 3).

In her first season of intercollegiate soccer, Berthiaume had an outstanding season leading the Huskies in scoring with 33 points on 13 goals and seven assists.  Tied with Allain for the team-lead in assists, Berthiaume scored her final three goals of the season, recording a hat trick in USM's 3-0 LEC quarterfinal win over UMass Dartmouth.  Twice named the LEC's Offensive Player of the Week, four of Berthiaume's goals went for game-winners as she finished the season ranked second in the Little East Conference in points scored and third in goals scored.  Berthiaume's 13 goals are second in single-season history for USM as are her seven assists in 2018.  She is tied for the single-season record for points in a season with 33.
