GORHAM, Maine – Senior Jessie Maywalt (Wall, N.J.) had a goal and an assist as the University of New England Nor'easters defeated the University of Southern Maine Huskies 2-1 in a non-conference women's soccer game Tuesday night at Hannaford Field.
With the win, UNE stops a two-game losing streak and improves to 5-4-2 overall. The Nor'easters are 4-1 on the road this season. Southern Maine drops to 4-8-1 with the loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
UNE took an early 1-0 lead on Maywalt's second goal of the season when she knocked in a shot to the near post after a cross through the box from senior forward Ashley Sherman (Ivoryton, Conn./Valley Regional). The Noreaster's made it 2-0 in the 32nd minute after Maywalt launched a lofting service off of a corner kick into traffic, finding senior Katie Beaudoin (Coventry, R.I.) in the scrum for the goal.
UNE maintained a two-goal advantage through the half, and fought off the Huskies' pressure in the second. The Huskies had several strong chances on goal late in the second. Junior Ciera Berthiaume (Windham, Maine) nearly headed in a ball in the 80th minute only to have it turned away on a diving effort from junior Jenna Pannone (Prospect, Conn.). Seconds later, sophomore Alex Allain (Carmel, Maine/Hermon) had her attempt stopped by another outstanding Pannone save.
Southern Maine was able to get one goal back on the Nor'easters in the 85th minute as Berthiaume put together a string of cut-backs before rocketing in her fifth goal of the season on a strong individual effort.
Pannone earned the win for UNE making seven saves, including five in the second half. Southern Maine freshman goalkeeper Kayla Gorman (Windham, Maine) had a strong performance in the loss making seven saves, including several one-on-one attempts coming off her line.
Southern Maine is on the road and back in Little East Conference action on Saturday (1:00 pm) at UMass Dartmouth.
