NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Junior Ciera Berthiaume (Windham, Maine) scored in the eighth minute and freshman Kayla Gorman (Windam, Maine) made six saves to make the result stand as the University of Southern Maine Huskies earned a 1-0 win over the UMass Dartmouth Corsairs in a Little East Conference women's soccer game Saturday afternoon at Cressy Field.
The win is the first LEC victory of the season for the Huskies who are now 1-4 in conference action and 5-8-1 overall. UMass Dartmouth is 2-10 and 0-4.
Early in the contest, Berthiaume cranked a shot to the left corner of the net from 35 yards out after receiving a pass from classmate Abigail Mazza (Rumford, Maine). The goal is Berthiaume's sixth of the season and 19th of her career.
Gorman's six-save shutout came with some help from her back line as Husky defenders made a pair of goal line clearances for team saves in the win. The shutout is Gorman's fourth of the season. UMass Dartmouth goalkeeper Jaimee O'Brien (West Springfield, Mass.) took the loss making two saves. O'Brien was assisted by her goal, as a late second-half attempt from senior Emily Bragg (Gorham, Maine) missed the frame and ricocheted off of the post.
Southern Maine remains on the road and travels to UMass Boston for its next Little East Conference game. The Huskies will face the Beacons on Wednesday (7:00 pm).
