CASTINE, Maine – Junior Ciera Berthaiume (Windham, Maine) and sophomore Alex Allain (Carmel, Maine/Hermon) each scored a goal as the University of Southern Maine Huskies defeated the Maine Maritime Academy Mariners 2-1 in a non-conference women's soccer game Tuesday night at Ritchie Field.
With the win, Southern Maine improves to 7-9-1 overall, earning its second straight victory. The Huskies are 5-4-1 on the road this season. Suffering its second straight loss, Maine Maritime falls to 9-4. The Mariners are now 8-3 at home in 2019
ON THE PITCH:
Allain scored her fifth goal of the season and second in as many games early in the contest in the seventh minute to give the Huskies' a 1-0 lead. Unassisted on the play, Allain turned in space and fired in the goal to the far post.
Despite outshooting the Mariners 15-2 in the first half, the Huskies maintained just a single-goal advantage through the opening 45 minutes. MMA goalkeeper Emily Conway made six first half saves to keeper her team in the ball game.
MMA drew the equalizer in the 63rd minute when Kelsea Anair recovered a misplayed ball and hit a long range strike over the top of Husky freshman Kayla Gorman (Windham, Maine). However, Berthiaume quickly retrieved her team's lead with her team-leading ninth goal of the season in the 68th minute. Berthiaume collected the ball on the far side of the field and exploded past the MMA defense before launching a low, driven shot past Conway for the game-winner. Berthiaume nearly had a brace in the 76th but hit the crossbar as the Huskies continued their offensive pressure throughout the contest.
USM held a 25-10 advantage in shots, including an 11-5 mark in shots on goal. MMA had a 4-2 lead in corner kicks.
Gorman (Windham, Maine) earned the win making four saves – two in each half – for Southern Maine. Conway absorbed the loss making nine saves.
NEWS & NOTES:
Allain's goal is the 12th of her career (37 games) and puts her in a tie for 15th in USM career records. With 12 goals and 10 assists over that time, Allain's 34 points are tied for 14th all-time.
Berthiaume now has 22 goals and 11 assists through 35 career games played for 55 points. Her 22 goals, 11 assists and 55 points are all presently fifth all-time in USM records.
Southern Maine returns to Little East Conference action and will host Rhode Island College on Saturday (12:00 pm)
