Southern Maine Gets First LEC Win, Downs UMass Boston 5-4
BOSTON, Mass.—University of Southern Maine junior Gabby Brooks (Palmero, Maine/Messalonskee) provided the decisive fifth point earning a three-set win at sixth singles to lead the Huskies past the host University of Massachusetts Boston, 5-4, in a Little East Conference women's tennis match Saturday afternoon at the B.C. High Tennis Courts.
The Huskies improved to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in LEC play. The Beacons opened their 2018 season on Saturday.
In the final match of the day, UMB freshman Leah Bosco (Greenfield, Mass.) defeated Brooks 6-1 in the first set, but Brooks came back to earn the point with a 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 win at sixth singles.
Southern Maine jumped out to a strong start in the match, earning wins at second and third doubles. Senior Joanna Scheidegger (Lyss, Switzerland) and Brooks defeated Chloe Gates (Plymouth, Mass.) and freshman Meaghan Moriarty (Norton, Mass.) 8-2 at third doubles. Sophomore Elise Harvey (Newton Abbot, United Kingdom) and senior Margaret Smith (Farmingdale, Maine/Gardiner Area) tacked on an 8-3 victory over Baila Mir (Somerset, Mass.) and Bosco at second doubles.
Southern Maine pushed its lead to 3-1 early in singles play, after UMB junior Valeria Tueme (Bonney Lake, Wash.) was forced to retire at second singles while leading 2-1. The Huskies made it 4-1 at third singles, when Harvey knocked off freshman Meaghan Moriarty (Norton, Mass.) 6-2, 6-1.
The Beacons cut into the deficit when Gates earned a 7-6 (7-2), 7-5 win over Smith at fourth singles. Moments later, UMass Boston made it 4-3 as Gauthier cruised past senior Courtney Jordan (Portland, Maine/Westbrook) 6-1, 6-4 at first-flight singles.
The Beacons evened the match with a big win at fifth singles. Mir held off Scheidegger 6-4, 7-5 to tie the match at 4-4, setting the stage for Brooks' dramatic, come-from-behind win.
Southern Maine is back in action on Tuesday (4 p.m.) playing its home opener against Thomas College. UMass Boston hosts Bridgewater State University, also on Tuesday (3 p.m.), for an LEC match.
