Huskies at Salem State on Saturday
GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine women's tennis team opened its 2018 home schedule Tuesday afternoon with a 9-0 non-conference win over visiting Thomas College at the Costello Sport Complex field house. The match was moved inside due to the inclement weather earlier in the day.
The win was the second straight for the Huskies improving their overall record to 3-1. The Terriers are still looking for their first win of season after six matches.
Southern Maine swept the three doubles matches taking all three by 8-0 scores. Juniors Samantha Harden (Turner, Maine/Leavitt Area) and Gabby Brooks (Palmero, Maine/Messalonskee) teamed up for the win at number one. The duo of sophomores Elise Harvey (Newton Abbot, United Kingdom) and Eden Martin (South Portland, Maine) prevailed at number two, and the combination of senior captain Margaret Smith (Farmingdale, Maine/Gardiner Area) and junior Tracy Edwards (Cranston, R.I.) took the point at number three.
The Huskies swept the six singles matches in straight sets losing only two games in the process. Harden, senior Courtney Jordan (Portland, Maine/Westbrook), junior Ashley Owens (Penn Yan, N.Y.), Harvey, Smith and senior Joanna Scheidegger (Lyss, Switzerland) earned the points.
Southern Maine is back in action on Saturday (1 p.m.) traveling to Salem State University for a Little East Conference match. Thomas plays tomorrow (4 p.m.) at Husson University.
