Southern Maine Edges Castleton 5-4
CASTLETON, Vt. -- Sophomore Elise Harvey (Newton Abbott, United Kingdom) provided the decisive fifth point to give the visiting University of Southern Maine Huskies women's tennis team a 5-4 Little East Conference victory over the Castleton University Spartans Saturday afternoon.
The win lifts the Huskies to .500 overall at 4-4, and 2-3 in the conference. The Spartans fell to 2-6 overall and remain winless in their first season in the LEC after five matches.
Southern Maine took a 2-1 lead in the match when Harvey and senior Margaret Smith (Farmingdale, Maine/Gardiner Area) won their number three doubles match 9-7 over Megan Hunt and Becca Corsette. Senior Courtney Jordan (Portland, Maine/Westbrook) and junior Ashley Owens (Penn Yan, N.Y.) gave USM its other point in doubles play with an 8-2 win at number two.
The teams split the six singles matches giving the Huskies the win. Junior Samantha Harden (Turner, Maine/Leavitt Area), Owens and Harvey earned victories at two, four and five. Harden dispatched with Kirsten Kruk 6-1, 6-3. Owens knocked off Corsette 6-2, 7-5, and Harvey gave USM the decisive fifth point with her 6-4, 6-4 win over Hunt.
Southern Maine is back in action on Tuesday (4 p.m.) hosting Worcester State University in an LEC match. Castleton will face Plymouth State University in LEC action, also on Tuesday (4 p.m.).
