Southern Maine Women's Tennis Receives Berth in LEC Championship Tournament
Huskies First Appearance in the Tournament Since 2013

            GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine women's tennis team will be the number six seed in this year's Little East Conference Women's Tennis Championship Tournament that begins tomorrow with two first-round matches.  The conference office announced the six-team tournament field Tuesday evening after the conclusion of the final regular-season match.

            Southern Maine finished the regular season 6-6 overall and in a three-way tie for fifth place with Bridgewater State University and Worcester State University at 4-5 in LEC play.  After the tiebreakers were applied, Bridgewater State was awarded the fifth seed, and USM received the sixth and final berth.  The tournament appearance is the first for the Huskies since 2013.

            The Huskies will travel to third-seeded Salem State University tomorrow (3 p.m.) for a first-round.  Bridgewater State will play at fourth-seeded University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in the other first-round match Wednesday (2:30 p.m.).

            Unbeaten regular-season champion Rhode Island College will host the semifinals and final on Friday and Saturday.  RIC will play the winner of the Bridgewater State-UMass Dartmouth match in one semifinal.  Plymouth State, the number two seed, will play the winner of the Southern Maine-Salem State match in the other semifinal.  RIC and PSU received first-round byes.

            The two semifinal winners will play for the conference championship, and an automatic berth in next spring's NCAA tournament, on Saturday.
