USM Women Earn LEC Weekly Recognition
GORHAM, Maine -- Junior Adela Kalilwa (Lewiston, Maine) of the University of Southern Maine women's indoor track and field team led a quartet of Huskies to Little East Conference weekly accolades when the conference office announced its third weekly set of women's track and field awards Monday afternoon.
Kalilwa was selected as the Field Athlete of the Week for the third time in her career, and classmate Ashley Joyner (Auburn, Maine/Granby [Texas]) was picked as the Track Athlete of the Week. Sophomores Allison MacKenzie (Minot, Maine/Edward Little) and Samantha Comeau (Maple Grove, Minn.) swept the Rookie Track Athlete of the Week and Rookie Field Athlete of the Week honors.
In addition to the four individual honors, the Huskies' 4 x 200-meter relay foursome of freshmen Taylor Chamberlain (Lewiston, Maine), Mykayla Hoggard (Bangor, Maine), Hannah Chadwick (Sebago, Maine/Lake Region) and Ottilie McPhail (Bradford, Maine/Central) was chosen as the Relay of the Week.
At the season opening USM Open, Kalilwa swept the horizontal jumps winning the long jump with a mark of 5.17 meters (16-11 ½) and the triple jump with a jump of 11.39 meters (37-4 ½). Her marks met the qualifying standards for the New England Division III Championships in both events. Kalilwa's triple jump mark tied for fifth best in the nation. In addition to her exploits in the jumps, Kalilwa also won the 55-meter dash in a time of 7.61 seconds and the 200 meters with a career-best time of 26.78 seconds.
Joyner won the 55-meter hurdles with her time of 9.36 seconds to earn her first LEC weekly honor. Joyner also was runner-up to Kalilwa in the long jump (4.96m/16-3 ¼) and triple jump (10.53m/34-6 ¾)
Making her collegiate track debut, MacKenzie, a former USM ice hockey player, won the 400 meters (1:05.92), and Comeau, another former ice hockey player competing in her first collegiate meet, placed third in the shot put with a throw of 10.77 meters (35-4).
The relay combined for a winning time of 1:51.74.
The Huskies are off for exams and the holidays until January 5 when they host the USM Open II meet.
