Southern Maine Women Have Strong Day at USM Open II Meet

Huskies Win 12 Individual Events

            GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine Women's track and field returned from the holiday break Saturday to win 12 individual events at the USM Open II meet held at the Costello Sports Complex field house.  The meet was a non-team-scoring event.

            Senior Haley Bantz (East Waterboro, Maine/Massabesic) and junior Adela Kalilwa (Lewiston, Maine) were double winners for the Huskies.  Bantz took the top spot in the 800 meters with her time of 2 minutes, 28.53 seconds, and the mile crossing the line in 5:52.26.  Kalilwa swept the horizontal jumps taking the long jump with a leap of 5.23 meters (17-2) and the triple jump with a mark of 11.36 meters (37-3 ¼).

            Other winners on the track for USM included freshman Mykayla Hoggard (Bangor, Maine) in the 55-meter dash (7.61), freshman Ottilie McPhail (Bradford, Maine/Central) in the 400 meters (1:04.52), freshman Hafido Awil (Lewiston, Maine) in the 600 (1:51.78), sophomore Sydney Sirois (Greene, Maine/St. Dominic) in the 3,000 (11:13.08) and junior Ashley Joyner (Auburn, Maine/Granbury [Texas]) in the 55-meter hurdles (9.05).

            In addition to Kalilwa, the Huskies received winning performances in the field events from freshman Bekah Robertson (Biddeford, Maine) in the high jump (1/50 meters/4-11), junior Katie Ferrara (Auburn, Maine/Edward Little) in the pole vault (3.05/10-0) and sophomore Samantha Comeau (Maple Grove, Minn.) in the shot put (11.21 meters/36.9 ½).

            Posting runner-up finishes in addition to their first-place performances were Hoggard in the long jump (5.06 meters/16-7 ¼) and Joyner in the triple jump (10.40 meters/34-1 ½).  Adding third-place finishes to their wins were McPhail in the 200 (28.63), Ferrara in the 55-meter hurdles (9.38), Robertson in the pole vault (2.60 meters/8-6 ¼) and Comeau in the weight throw (10.04 meters/32-11 ¼).

            Meeting the New England Division III Championships (February 22-23) qualifying standards were Joyner in the 55 hurdles and triple jump, Hoggard in the long jump and Comeau in the shot put.

            Freshman Taylor Chamberlain (Lewiston, Maine) had a pair of runner-up finishes in the 200 (28.47) and the high jump (1.45 meters/4-9).  Also earning second-place finishes were junior Samantha Dow (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) in the 55 hurdles (9.36), junior Allison Pickering (Orono, Maine) in the pole vault (2.90 meters/9-6 ¼) and Olivia Richmond (Jefferson, Maine/Lincoln Academy) in the shot put (9.40 meters/30-10 ¼).  Richmond also earned a third in the high jump (1.45 meters/4-9).

            Freshman Hannah Chadwick (Sebago, Maine/Lake Region) took third in the long jump (4.54 meters/14-10 ¾) and fourth in the triple jump (9.82 meters/32-2 ¾).  Freshman Emily Colby (Lunenburg, Vt./Lyndon Institute) took third in the 400 (1:06.12).

            Southern Maine is back in action next Saturday (January 12) traveling to Waltham, Mass., to compete in the annual Reggie Poyau Invitational being held at Brandeis University.
