Southern Maine Tops the Field at Poyau Invitational
WALTHAM, Mass. -- The University of Southern Maine women's track and field team topped the field of eight teams Saturday at the annual Reggie Poyau Invitational held at Brandeis University. The Huskies edged the host Judges 121.50-118 to take the top spot.
Junior Adela Kalilwa (Lewiston, Maine) was a double winner for USM winning the 60-meter dash with a time of 8.21 seconds and the triple jump with a mark of 11.08 meters (36-4 ¼). Kalilwa also had a runner-up finish in the long jump with a leap of 5.08 meters (16-8).
Senior Haley Bantz (East Waterboro, Maine/Massabesic) won the 600 meters with her time of 1:40.93. Bantz's time met the qualifying standard for next month's New England Division III Championships. The senior co-captain also shared the top spot in the high jump with Mary Jok of Newbury College as both cleared 1.50 meters (4-11).
Junior Allison Pickering (Orono, Maine) led a 1-2-3 finish by the Huskies in the pole vault clearing 3.05 meters (10-0). Classmate Katie Ferrara (Auburn, Maine/Edward Little) also cleared 3.05 meters to take second, and senior Penny Maimone (Stoneham, Mass./Arlington Catholic) was third at 2.95 meters (9-6 ¼).
Others scoring in the top three included sophomore Samantha Comeau (Maple Grove, Minn.) who was runner-up in the shot put (10.83 meters/35-6 ½), freshman Mykayla Hoggard (Bangor, Maine) who was third in the 60-meter dash (8.28), sophomore Sydney Sirois (Greene, Maine/St. Dominic) with a third in the 5,000 meters (19-12-94) and freshman Bekah Robertson (Biddeford, Maine) placed third in the high jump (1.50 meters/4-11). Robertson also earned a point with her sixth-place finish in the pole vault (2.75 meters/9-0 ¼), and Hoggard score two with a fifth in the long jump (4.74 meters/15-6 ¾).
Freshman Ottilie McPhail (Bradford, Maine/Central) earned a fourth in the 400 (1:06.26) and a sixth in the 200 (28.49). Junior Ashley Joyner (Auburn, Maine/Granbury [Texas]) scored with a fifth in the 60-meter hurdles (10.72) and a sixth in the triple jump (9.93 meters/32-7). Freshmen Taylor Chamberlain (Lewiston, Maine) and Olivia Richmond (Jefferson, Maine/Lincoln Academy) were part of a four-way tie for fifth in the high jump (1.40 meters/4-7). Rookie Hannah Chadwick (Sebago, Maine/Lake Region) contributed a fifth in the triple jump (9.94 meters/32-7 ½).
Finishing behind USM and Brandeis were Merrimack with 74.75 points and Bentley with 62.
The Huskies will compete next weekend at the Bowdoin College Invitational.
