Southern Maine Women Finish Third at USM Open III
GORHAM, Maine -- In their final home event of the 2018-19 indoor season, the University of Southern Maine women's track and field team finished third among 10 teams competing in the USM Open III meet Saturday at the Costello Sports Complex field house.
The Huskies earned 14 individual top five finishes during the meet, highlighted by three first-place finishes. Southern Maine scored 100.50 points to take third behind Assumption College and Bates College. Assumption ran away from the field with 234 points to finish first while Bates was a distant runner-up with 117 points.
Freshman Mykayla Hoggard (Bangor, Maine) had an impressive day scoring a win in the 400 meters with her time on 1 minute, 0.78 seconds. Hoggard's time easily met the qualifying standard for next month's New England Division III Championships and moved her into ninth place on the Huskies' all-time top ten list. Hoggard also had a fourth-place result in the long jump with a leap of 5.02 meters (16-5 ¾), and ran the third quickest time of the 55-meter dash trials at 7.53 seconds.
Senior Haley Bantz (East Waterboro, Maine/Massabesic) posted a win in the 800 meters with her time of 2:24.52, and placed third in the high jump clearing 1.50 meters (4-11). Bantz's time in the 800 also met the qualifying standard for the New England D3 meet.
Junior Adela Kalilwa (Lewiston, Maine) continued her strong season in the horizontal jumps winning the triple jump with a season-best mark of 11.43 meters (37-6), and taking third in the long jump with a season-best jump of 5.31 meters (17-5 ¼). She also had a fifth-place result in the 200 meters (27.13)
Others earning third-place finishes included freshman Emily Colby (Lunenburg, Vt./Lyndon Institute) in the 1,000 meters (3:27.81) and junior Katie Ferrara (Auburn, Maine/Edward Little) in the pole vault (3.05 meters/10-0). Ferrara also had a fifth-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles (9.17).
Picking up fourth-place finishes were sophomore Allison MacKenzie (Minot, Maine/Edward Little) in the 600 meters (1:47.68) and sophomore Samantha Thompson (Westbrook, Maine) in the 3,000 meters (11:58.65).
Freshman Taylor Chamberlain (Lewiston, Maine) came home fifth in the high jump (1.45 meters/4-9) and junior Samantha Round (Veazie, Maine/Orono) finished in the same position in the pole vault (2.75 meters/9-0 ¼).
The Huskies 4 x 200 (1:54.17) and 4 x 400 (4:27.77) relays each scored fifth-place results.
In other track news this weekend, sophomore Sydney Sirois (Greene, Maine/St. Dominic) posted a time of 10:53.54 in the 3,000 meters on Friday at the John Thomas Terrier Classic held at Boston University.
Southern Maine will travel to Bowdoin College next Friday night (6 p.m.) to compete in the annual State Championships meet.
