Junior Wins Honor for the Third Time This Winter
GORHAM, Maine -- For the third time this season, and the fifth time in her career, the Little East Conference has selected junior Adela Kalilwa (Lewiston, Maine) of the University of Southern Maine women's track and field team as its Field Athlete of the Week. Kalilwa previously was picked as the Field Athlete of the Week on December 17 and January 7.
Competing in her final home meet of the 2018-19 indoor season, the USM Open III, Kalilwa posted season-best marks in the long jump and the triple jump. She won the triple jump with a mark of 11.43 meters (37-6) after taking third in the long jump behind two jumpers from Division II Assumption College with a leap of 5.31 meters (17-5 ¼).
Kalilwa is presently ranked first in New England (and 13th nationally) in the triple jump, and sixth in the region in the long jump.
On the track, Kalilwa also had a fifth-place result in the 200 meters with her time of 27.13 seconds.
USM finished third among the 10 teams competing in the meet at the Costello Sports Complex field house. The Huskies earned 14 individual top-five finishes during the meet, highlighted by three first-place finishes. Southern Maine scored 100.50 points to take third behind Assumption College and Bates College.
The Huskies travel to Bowdoin College this Friday evening (6 p.m.) for the annual State Championships meet.
