Kalilwa Wins Triple Jump at N.E. Division III Championships
BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Junior Adela Kalilwa (Lewiston, Maine) won her first individual title Saturday to highlight the University of Southern Maine women's track and field team's performance at the New England Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships held this weekend at Bowdoin College.
Kalilwa, the top seed in the triple jump, took the top spot on the podium with her season-best leap of 11.73 meters (38-6) to receive her first individual title. Kalilwa's winning jump was just two centimeters shy of her school record mark. Kalilwa won her first title as a member of the Huskies' winning 4 x 200-meter relay last year.
In addition to her triple jump title, Kalilwa finished third in the long jump with a jump of 5.46 meters (17-11) to earn Division III All-New England honors in the event.
Also receiving Division III All-New England honors was senior Haley Bantz (East Waterboro, Maine/Massabesic) who finished eighth in the 600 meters with her career-best time of 1 minute, 40.56 seconds. Bantz's time moved her up to seventh place on the Huskies' top 10 list.
Other notable performances were turned in by freshman Mykayla Hoggard (Bangor, Maine) who posted a career-best time of 26.74 seconds in the 200 meters, and jumped 5.04 meters (16-6 ½) in the long jump. Junior Katie Ferrara (Auburn, Maine/Edward Little) cleared 3.11 meters (10-2 ½) in the pole vault.
Williams College took the team title for the second straight year with 140 points. M.I.T. was runner-up with 87.50 points, followed by Tufts University with 67, Middlebury College with 57 and Bowdoin College with 52. Southern Maine earned 17 points to finish 15th among the 26 scoring teams.
Selected USM competitors will compete next Saturday at the Tufts Last Chance Meet in a final bid to qualify for the 2019 NCAA Division III National Championships.
