Kalilwa Wins Three Events, Potts Tops in the 100 Dash and Hurdles
MANSFIELD, Conn. -- Paced by sophomore Adela Kalilwa's (Lewiston, Maine) three first-place finishes, the University of Southern Maine women's track and field finished first among the seven teams competing Friday afternoon at the ECSU (Eastern Connecticut State University) Spring Invitational at the ECSU Athletic Complex.
The Huskies edged the host Warriors, 195-180, to take the top spot. Roger Williams University was third with 95 points followed by Castleton University with 52 and the University of Maine at Farmington with 37.
Kalilwa stood atop the podium in the 200 meters (26.50), long jump (outdoor career best 5.58 meters/18-3 ¾) and the triple jump (11.74 meters/38-6 ¼). Sophomore Jhanel Potts (Boston, Mass./Concord-Carlisle) was a double winner for the Huskies taking the 100-meter dash (12.51) and the 100-meter hurdles (15.68).
Other individual winners for USM included sophomores Emily Close (Orleans, Vt./Lake Region Union) in the 400-meter hurdles (1:08.31) and Allison Pickering (Orono, Maine) in the pole vault (3.10 meters/10-2), and freshman Elena Grace (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) in the shot put (9.68 meters/31-9 ¼).
Close and sophomore Katie Ferrara (Auburn, Maine/Edward Little) had runner-up finishes on tiebreakers. Close matched Grace's best throw in the shot put while Ferrara also cleared the same height as Pickering in the pole vault, but each took second on the tiebreaker. Grace also had a third-place result in the hammer throw (35.33 meters/115-11) and a fifth in the javelin (31.22 meters/102-5).
Senior Rachel Ingram (Winthrop, Maine) took second in the triple jump (10.71 meters/35-1 ¾) and third in the long jump (5.12 meters/16-9 ¾). Freshman Caitlin Lally (Portland, Maine/Deering) and sophomore Samantha Round (Veazie, Maine/Orono) posted a pair of third-place finishes. Lally was third in the 100 meters (13.32) and the 100 hurdles (16.82) while Round took third in the pole vault (2.80 meters/9-2 ¼) and the triple jump (10.18 meters/33-4 ¾). Pickering, Ferrara and Round combined for a 1-2-3 USM finish in the pole vault.
Also turning in third-place finishes were sophomore Jess Regan (Sturbridge, Mass./Shepherd Hill Regional) in the 400 meters (1:05.09), junior Haley Bantz (East Waterboro, Maine/Massabesic) in the 1500 meters (5:17.50) and rookie Sydney Sirois (Greene, Maine/St. Dominic Academy) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
The Huskies return to action on April 7 traveling to the Smith College Invitational.
