Kalilwa Wins Triple Jump at CSU Buccaneer Invitational

Huskies Finish Third Among Seven Teams

            CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Junior Adela Kalilwa (Lewiston, Maine) opened the 2019 outdoor season by winning the triple jump and placing third in the long jump Saturday afternoon to highlight the University of Southern Maine women's track and field team's performance at the Charleston Southern University Buccaneer Invitational held at CSU's Jim Settle Track.

            Lead by Kalilwa, Southern Maine finished third among the seven teams competing with 112 points.  The University of South Carolina finished first with 226 points, followed by host Charleston Southern with 129.

            Kalilwa took the lead in the triple jump with her mark of 11.44 meters in the second round.  In the fourth round, Kalilwa posted her winning mark of 11.66 meters (38-3 ¼).  In the long jump, Kalilwa placed third with her leap of 5.47 meters (17-11 ½) in the fourth round of jumps.  Kalilwa's marks met the qualifying standards for the New England Division III Championships in May.

            Other scoring performances in the field events included fourth-place finishes from freshmen Catherine Close (Orleans, Vt./Lake Region Union) in the javelin (31.57 meters/103-7), Mykayla Hoggard (Bangor, Maine) in the long jump (5.08 meters/16-8), and Hannah Chadwick (Sebago, Maine/Lake Region) in the triple jump (10.22 meters/33-6 ½).  Chadwick also finished sixth in the long jump (4.83 meters/15-10 ¼).

            Sophomore Samantha Comeau (Maple Grove, Minn.) placed in three events taking a fifth in the shot put (10.90 meters/35-9 ¼) and eighths in the discus (29.96 meters/98-3) and hammer throw (30.71 meters/100-9).  Freshman Taylor Chamberlain (Lewiston, Maine) finished in a three-way tie for fifth in the high jump (1.50 meters/4-11).

            On the track, junior Jhanel Potts (Boston, Mass./Concord-Carlisle) posted a pair of N.E. Division III Championships qualifying times with her times in the preliminary round of the 100-meter hurdles (16.04), and her sixth-place result in the 100-meter dash (12.71).  Junior Samantha Dow (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) also met the N.E. Div. III standard with her fifth-place finish in the 100 hurdles (16.35).

            Sophomore Allison MacKenzie (Minot, Maine/Edward Little) had the Huskies best finish on the track scoring a second-place finish in the 800 meters (2:33.02).  Freshman Emily Colby (Lunenburg, Vt./Lyndon Institute) was right behind in third place (2:33.21).

            USM's 4 x 400-meter relay foursome of senior Haley Bantz (East Waterboro, Maine/Massabesic), freshman Hafido Awil (Lewiston, Maine), Colby and MacKenzie combined for a time of 4:19.05 to finish in second place.

            The Huskies next competition will be on April 6 when they compete at the Bowdoin College Invitational.
