Kalilwa Sweeps the Horizontal Jumps at the Aloha Relays

Kalilwa Wins Two Events, Huskies Finish Third at Aloha Relays

            LEWISTON, Maine -- Junior Adela Kalilwa (Lewiston, Maine) swept the horizontal jumps Saturday to help the University of Southern Maine women's track and field team finish third among the eight teams competing Friday and Saturday at the Aloha Relays held at Bates College.

            The Huskies compiled 90.50 points to finish third.  Bowdoin College finished atop the final standings with 247.50 points, followed by host Bates with 171.  Colby College rounded out the top half of the field with 65.5 points.

            Kalilwa won the long jump with a leap of 5.63 meters (18-5¾) to lead a one-two sweep in the event with freshman Mykayla Hoggard (Bangor, Maine) who jumped 5.44 meters (17-10¼).  Kalilwa came back to win the triple jump with a season-best mark of 11.89 meters (39-0¼).  Kalilwa's triple jump mark moved her up to third on the latest national performance list.

            On the track, Kalilwa added a third-place finish In the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.69 seconds in the finals.  Kalilwa reached the finals with her season-best time of 12.59 in the prelims.

            Other scoring results on the track included freshman Ottilie McPhail (Bradford, Maine/Central) with a fifth-place finish in the 200 meters in a time of 27.70, and classmate Taylor Chamberlain (Lewiston, Maine) took fourth in the 400 meters crossing the finish line in 1:02.04.

            The Huskies' 4 x 100 relay combination of Chamberlain, Kalilwa, McPhail and Hoggard posted a time of 49.76 to take the runner-up spot.

            In the field events, senior Penny Maimone (Stoneham, Mass./Arlington Catholic) and junior Katie Ferrara (Auburn, Maine/Edward Little) tied for third in the pole vault clearing 2.95 meters (9-8), and freshman Bekah Robertson (Biddeford, Maine) took sixth clearing 2.80 meters (9-2¼).  Freshman Hannah Chadwick (Sebago, Maine/Lake Region) earned a fourth-place finish in the triple jump with a mark of 10.32 meters (33-10¼).

            In the throws, freshman Catherine Close (Orleans, Vt./Lake Region Union) placed fifth In the javelin with a throw of 29.51 meters (96-10).  Sophomore Tina Dang (Portland, Maine/Deering) grabbed the final scoring position (sixth) in the hammer throw with her effort of 35.17 meters (115-5).  Sophomore Samantha Comeau (Maple Grove, Minn.) placed sixth in the shot put and the discus with marks of 10.10 meters (33-1¾) and 29.33 meters (96-3) respectively.

            USM took three scoring positions in the two-day heptathlon.  Junior Jess Regan (Sturbridge, Mass./Shepherd Hill Regional) was runner-up with 3,018 points.  Freshmen Olivia Richmond (Jefferson, Maine/Lincoln Academy) and Sabrina Freeman (Hallowell, Maine/Hall-Dale) place third and fourth, respectively, with 2,752 and 2,448 points.

            Southern Maine will travel to Fitchburg State University next Saturday to compete in the annual New England Alliance/Little East Conference Championships.
