Junior Voted Most Outstanding Field Events Performer at N.E. Division III Championships
GORHAM, Maine -- University of Southern Maine junior Adela Kalilwa (Lewiston, Maine) has been selected as this year's recipient of the Branwen King Award as the outstanding field events performer at the recent New England Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The honor was announced on Wednesday following a vote by the women's track and field coaches.
Competing at the championships held at Williams College on May 3-4, Kalilwa swept the horizontal jumps. On the opening day, Kalilwa became the first USM women to crack the 19-foot barrier in the long jump with her winning, school-record jump of 5.82 meters (19-1¼). The previous USM record of 5.71 meters (18-9) was set by Hannah Wiley at the 2012 NCAA Division III Championships.
The next afternoon, Kalilwa completed her double by winning the triple jump with a mark of 11.89 meters (39-0¼). Kalilwa, who fouled on her first two attempts, took the lead in the competition with her jump of 11.80 meters (38-8¾) in the third round, and her winning mark came in the fifth round of jumps.
Kalilwa accounted for 20 of the Huskies' 22 points to finish 14th among the 34 scoring teams in the final standings.
Heading into Thursday's final national qualifier meets, Kalilwa was ranked fifth nationally in the long jump and eighth in the triple jump. The final descending-order lists for the NCAA Division III National Championships will be posted Friday.
