Southern Maine Picked Sixth in LEC Preseason Poll

            GORHAM, Maine -- The votes have been cast and tabulated by the Little East Conference office for the annual women's volleyball coaches' preseason poll released today.

            The three-time defending champion University of Massachusetts Boston Beacons earned the top spot garnering six first-place votes and 61 total points.  Keene State College was runner-up in the poll with two first-place votes and 58 points.  Eastern Connecticut State University took the remaining first-place vote and 48 points.

            Rounding out the poll were Plymouth State University in fourth place with 40 points, followed by Western Connecticut State University with 37, the University of Southern Maine with 31, Rhode Island College with 20, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth with 14 and conference newcomer Castleton University with nine points.

            Southern Maine fifth-year head coach Diane Newell returns nine players, led by setter Nicole Schmitz (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham), the lone senior on the roster, from last year's team that finished 20-10 overall and 3-4 in conference play.

            The Huskies open their 2018 season on August 31 (6 p.m.) at Maine Maritime Academy.  Their home opener will be on September 5 (7 p.m.) when they host Bowdoin College at the Costello Sports Complex.

            Little East Conference play opens September 15 when USM entertains UMass Dartmouth as part of a tri-match at the Costello Sports Complex.
