Southern Maine Falls in Season Opener
CASTINE, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine women's volleyball team opened the 2018 season dropping a 3-0 decision (25-17, 25-9, 25-20) to host Maine Maritime Academy Friday evening at Smith Gymnasium. The match is part of a two-day four-team round-robin event at Maine Maritime.
The Mariners tool the first set with a late run to go ahead 1-0. The middle set was dominated by MMA, highlighted by a nine-point run midway through the set. The decisive third set was a back-and-forth affair with the Mariners finally prevailing.
Junior Kylee Austin (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) led the Huskies with five kills, three blocks and a dig, while senior Nicole Schmitz (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham) added a team-high 11 assists to go along with three digs, two kills and one assist. Sophomore newcomer Kacey Foerster (Scarborough, Maine) led Southern Maine with five digs while also chipping in with three blocks and two kills.
Freshman Rachel Melampy (Duxbury, Mass.) made her presence known in her first collegiate start, leading the Mariners with a double-double of 11 kills and 11 digs. Junior Sydney Adams (Trumbull, Conn.) led all players with 27 assists and also chipped in with four digs, three kills, two aces and a block. Junior Maria Perez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) added a match-high 15 digs.
Southern Maine will return to Smith Gymnasium on Saturday for two matches against the University of New England (10 a.m.) and Saint Joseph's College (12 p.m.). Maine Maritime will follow taking on UNE (2 p.m.) and Saint Joseph's (4 p.m.).
