Southern Maine Sweeps UNE and St. Joseph's

            CASTINE, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine women's volleyball bounced back from Friday evening's season-opening loss to sweep the University of New England and Saint Joseph's College (Me.) on Saturday at Smith Gymnasium on the campus of Maine Maritime Academy.  The matches were part of a two-day, four-team round-robin event held at MMA.

            Southern Maine began the day by defeating UNE 3-0 (25-22, 26-24, 25-21), then came right back to knock off Saint Joseph's 3-0 (21-13, 21-15, 21-13).  The two wins give the Huskies a 2-1 mark after the first weekend of the campaign.

            In the tightly-contested opening match, sophomore Kacey Foerster (Scarborough, Maine) led the Huskies' offense with 10 kills and a pair of service aces.  Junior co-captain Kylee Austin (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) added eight kills and five total blocks, and classmate Megan Gettings (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Eastern) chipped in with six kills.

            Senior co-captain Nicole Schmitz (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham) directed the attack passing out 22 assists and also had 12 digs to record her first double-double of the season.  Schmitz also was in on four blocks.  Sophomore Lauren Delissio (Hebron, Conn./RHAM) had a team-high 16 digs and sophomore Rachel Chillé (Yarmouth, Maine) had 10 digs.

            For the Nor'easters, senior Rene Roggenbuck (Goffstown, N.H.) had 13 kills to lead all players, and junior Katie Flynn (Merrimack, N.H.) posted a double-double with 10 kills and a match-high 20 digs.  Sophomore Sydney Christiansen (Palatine, Ill.) passed out 28 assists and had nine digs.  Junior Paige Simoneau (Hudson, N.H.) contributed 16 digs.

            Against the Monks, the Huskies collected 15 service aces, paced by sophomore Jamie Jannarone (Windham, Maine) with four, and benefitted from 11 Monks service errors.  Jannarone also was one of three USM players to knock down four kills.  Foerster and rookie Alexis Dow (Miami, Fla./Saint Brendan) also had four kills.  Schmitz had 17 assists and nine digs to come up a dig shy of a second double-double.  Delissio led USM with 12 digs and had three aces.

            Sophomore Erin Olson (Stoughton, Mass./Ursuline Academy) led the Monks offense with a match-high seven kills.  Rookie Nicole Baron (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) had five kills and classmate Sarah Quinn (Dover, N.H.) added four.  Senior Sarah Dyer (Seabrook, N.H./Winnacunnet) and sophomore Sophia Randall (Epping, N.H.) had seven assists apiece. 

            Southern Maine will play its home opener on Wednesday (7 p.m.) hosting Bowdoin College for a non-conference match at the Costello Sports Complex.
