Bowdoin Overpowers Southern Maine 3-0
GORHAM, Maine -- The visiting Bowdoin College Polar Bears opened their 2018 season with an impressive 3-0 win (25-8, 25-13, 25-22) over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference volleyball match Wednesday evening at the Warren Hill Gymnasium. The match was the Huskies home opener.
The Polar Bears dominated the first set outscoring the Huskies with a 14-2 run to close out the set. In the second set, the Polar Bears pulled away from a 10-10 tie producing a 15-3 run to take the set and go up 2-0.
Southern Maine hung tough in the third set rallying from a 19-11 deficit to tie the score at 22-22. A kill from Caroline Flaherty gave the visitors the lead, and two USM attack errors closed the match.
Ashley Williams lead the Bowdoin attack with nine kills. Danielle Abrams added five kills, and four other players had four kills. The Polar Bears compiled a solid .280 attack percentage in the match.
Kate Kiser and Lexie Freund combined to dish out 27 assists. Kiser had 17 helpers in the first two sets while Freund had 10 over the final two sets. Lisa Sheldon had 12 digs.
Southern Maine hits the road this weekend traveling to WPI on Saturday for a tri-match that includes Fitchburg State. Bowdoin will play in the Brandeis Invitational this Friday and Saturday.
