Southern Maine Overpowers Newbury 3-0
GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore Kacey Foerster (Scarborough, Maine) had 12 kills as the University of Southern Maine Huskies overpowered the visiting Newbury College Nighthawks 3-0 (25-7, 25-9, 25-15) Thursday evening in non-conference women's volleyball action at the Warren Hill Gymnasium.
The win improved the Huskies' overall record to 10-5 on the season. The Nighthawks slip to 2-8 with their second straight loss.
The Huskies, behind the serving of senior Nicole Schmitz (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham), raced out to an 11-0 lead in the first set. Junior Jenna Graves (Corinth, Texas) served eight consecutive points, including three service aces, in the latter stages of the set, to allow Foerster to close the set with her ninth kill.
The second set was a near carbon-copy of the first as the Huskies took command opening with a 13-1 run. Sophomore Rachel Chillé (Yarmouth, Maine) served 11 straight points, including three aces.
Newbury stayed close in the third set and was within striking distance at 18-13. The Huskies finished off the set, and the match, with a 7-2 run.
Complementing Foerster up front were junior Kylee Austin (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy), sophomore Jamie Jannarone (Windham, Maine) and rookie Alexis Dow (Miami, Fla./Saint Brendan). Austin had seven kills, two aces and a pair of blocks. Jannarone contributed six kills and two block assists, and Dow had five kills and four block assists.
Schmitz directed the offense passing out 20 assists. Chillé had 10 digs to go along with four aces. Sophomore libero Lauren Delissio (Hebron, Conn./RHAM) led all players with 13 digs.
Sophomores Stephanie Rheaume (Hampton, N.H./Winnacunnet) and Monica Bolduk (Vernon, Conn./Rockville) had five kills apiece for the Nighthawks. Rookie setter Halie Sanders (McDonough, Ga./Luella) posted a double-double with 13 assists and 11 digs. Bolduk also had a team-high 12 digs.
Southern Maine is back in action on Saturday (12 p.m.) hosting Keene State College and The Sage Colleges for a tri-match at Hill Gymnasium. Newbury hosts Bay Path College on Saturday (12 p.m.) in a New England Collegiate Conference match.
