Huskies Knock Off Baruch 3-0, Fall to MHC 3-1
SOUTH HALDEY, Mass. -- Despite a season-high 20 kills from sophomore Kacey Foerster (Scarborough, Maine), the University of Southern Maine women's volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision (22-25, 25-20, 17-25, 21-25) to Mount Holyoke College in the final match of a tri-match played Saturday at MHC's Howard Gymnasium.
The Huskies opened their day by beating Baruch College 3-0 (25-8, 25-21-25-22) in the middle match. Baruch opened the day knocking off Mount Holyoke 3-1 (16-25, 25-19, 25-20, 30-28). With the split, Southern Maine now stands at 13-9 on the season. Baruch is 7-15, and Mount Holyoke checks in at 7-11.
Foerster had a huge second set against Mount Holyoke knocking down eight kills to help USM tie the match at 1-1. The Lyons were able to take the pivotal third set with a balanced attack at the net as four players had three kills apiece. The Lyons overcame a one-point deficit (17-16) in the final set closing with a 9-3 run to take the set, and the match. Foerster finished the match with her first double-double of the season as she also had 18 digs.
Junior Kylee Austin (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) and rookie Alexis Dow (Miami, Fla./Saint Brendan) combined for 14 kills at the middle hitter position. Senior Nicole Schmitz (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham) posted a double-double with 27 assists and 13 digs. Rookie Sophie Lindsay (Sierra Madre, Calif.) dished out 14 assists and had seven digs.
Rookie Sarah Bishop (Rutland, Mass./Wachusett Regional) paced the MHC attack with 12 kills, and senior Jamesa Allen (Orlando, Fla./Lake Nona) contributed 11. Bishop had a double-double adding 11 digs to her line. Sophomore Brayden Walden (McKinney, Texas/McKinney North) orchestrated the offense passing out 39 assists, and had a double-double collecting 15 digs. Senior libero Cameron Graham (Sarasota, Fla./The Out of Door Academy) led all players with 21 digs.
Against Baruch, junior Megan Gettings (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Eastern), Foerster and sophomore Jamie Jannarone (Windham, Maine) led the attack at net with eight kills apiece. Austin added six kills to go along with five blocks. Schmitz posted another double-double with 18 assists and 10 digs. Foerster and sophomore Lauren Delissio (Hebron, Conn./RHAM) shared team-high honors with 16 digs.
Junior Anita Sengara (Vancouver, B.C.) led Baruch with eight kills. Junior Sanaa Hadjeb (Astoria, N.Y.) and sophomore Katherine Chen (Queens, N.Y.) combined for 19 assists, and sophomore Stella Chung (Staten Island, N.Y.) led all players with 17 digs.
Southern Maine will be back home on Thursday (7 p.m.) when it hosts Colby-Sawyer College. Mount Holyoke travels to Clark University on Tuesday (7 p.m.) for a NEWMAC match. Baruch will host CCNY on Thursday (7 p.m.).
