Huskies Close Regular Season at Eastern Connecticut on Saturday
GORHAM, Maine -- The visiting Rivier University Raiders rallied from a one-set deficit to defeat the University of Southern Maine Huskies 3-1 (22-25, 25-15, 25-18, 25-23) in a non-conference women's volleyball match Thursday evening at the Warren Hill Gymnasium.
The win was the sixth straight for the Raiders, and improved their overall record to 24-6. The Huskies, playing their final regular-season home match, dropped to 15-12 overall.
In the opening set, Southern Maine rallied from a nine-point deficit (20-11) with an 11-2 run to tie the score at 22-22 before taking the set. Rivier again jumped out to a big lead (20-10) in the second set, but this time USM was unable to mount a charge.
Tied 15-15 in the pivotal third set, the Raiders went on a 10-3 run to take the set and a 2-1 lead in the match. After taking a 2-1 lead in the fourth set, the Raiders trailed for much of the set until finally taking the lead for good with a 4-0 run that snapped an 18-18 tie.
Graduate student Courtney Collins (Litchfield, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) led the Raider offense with 13 kills. Junior Taylor Dunster (Sutton, Mass.) added 10 kills, and rookie Avery Pollard (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) contributed nine kills. Rookie Sydney Racevicius (Woodbury, Conn./Cheshire Academy) had seven kills, four service aces and 13 digs.
Senior setter Hayley Macken (Clifton Park, N.Y.) conducted the Raider offense dishing out 44 assists. Rookie Leah Giampietro (Coventry, R.I.) led all players with 14 digs.
Junior Megan Gettings (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Eastern) paced the Southern Maine attack with 11 kills and a .348 attack percentage (11-3-23). Sophomore Kacey Foerster (Scarborough, Maine) added eight kills and had 10 digs.
Senior Nicole Schmitz (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham), the Huskies' lone senior, passed out 26 assists and had four kills and six digs in her final home match. Rookie Sophie Lindsay (Sierra Madre, Calif.) had 10 assists and three kills. Sophomore Lauren Delissio (Hebron, Conn./RHAM) had 13 digs.
Southern Maine closes the regular season this Saturday (12 p.m.) traveling to Eastern Connecticut State University for a tri-match, including a critical Little East Conference match with the hosts. Rivier finishes the regular season on Saturday (11 a.m.) hosting Simmons College in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference match.
