Southern Maine Sweeps UMass Dartmouth and Smith
DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- Sophomores Kacey Foerster (Scarborough, Maine) and Sophie Lindsay (Pasadena, Calif.) each posted double-doubles in both matches as the University of Southern Maine Huskies volleyball team swept the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and Smith College in a tri-match on Saturday at UMD's Tripp Center.
The Huskies defeated UMass Dartmouth in a Little East Conference match 3-1 (25-23, 22-25, 26-24, 25-16) to begin the day's action. USM came from a set down against Smith to take a 3-2 non-conference victory (25-23, 21-25, 15-25, 25-20, 15-11). The two wins extends the Huskies' winning streak to five, and improved their records to 12-10 overall and 3-2 in LEC play.
In the final match of the day, Smith (4-16) knocked off UMass Dartmouth (6-12) in four sets (23-25, 27-25, 25-23, 25-19).
In the opening match against UMD, Foerster posted 12 kills and 13 digs while Lindsay had 10 kills and 13 assists. Lindsay was one dig shy of a triple-double.
Sophomore Emma Aillet (Deer Park, Texas) and senior Nicole Silverman (Chelmsford, Mass.) led the UMD attack with 11 kills apiece. Silverman had a double-double in the match as she also had 14 digs. Senior Jordan Rittberger (Huntington, N.Y.) passed out 22 assists, and classmate Jillian Sykora (Waterford, Conn.) led all players with 27 digs.
Against Smith, Lindsay had 12 kills and 24 assists for her seventh double-double of the season. Foerster came in with 14 kills and 14 digs to record her 10th double-double of the year. Foerster also had five service aces.
Sophomore Molly Mawhinney (South Portland, Maine) and junior Jamie Jannarone (Windham, Maine) chipped in with five kills apiece. Delissio had a team-high 20 digs, and senior Megan Gettings (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Eastern) had 14 digs.
Junior Caleigh Johnson (Georgetown, Texas) led the Smith attack knocking down 14 kills. Junior Claire Cicchetti (Menlo Park, Calif.) and rookie Ava Zollinger (Orlando, Fla.) each had nine kills, and rookie Gabby Beckman (Aurora, Colo.) posted eight kills. First-year setter Evi Evgeniou (Thessaloniki, Greece) earned a double-double as she passed out 41 assists and had 11 digs. Senior libero Jody Huang (Cranston, R.I.) led all players with 21 digs. Beckman also had 17 digs.
Southern Maine returns to the court on Wednesday (7 p.m.) when it travels to Boston to face the University of Massachusetts Boston in a Little East Conference match. UMass Dartmouth travels to Rhode Island College on Wednesday (7 p.m.) for a Little East contest. Smith hosts Emerson College on Tuesday (7 p.m.).
